Volunteer hosting – Asylum Seekers

Could you provide a home for a young refugee who is seeking asylum?

Following the government pledge to resettle Unaccompanied Asylum Seeking Children in the UK, SASH has been asked by City of York Council (CYC) and North Yorkshire County Council (NYCC) to help provide safe accommodation and support for young asylum seekers through our Supported Lodgings scheme.

We are looking for volunteer ‘hosts’ in Harrogate, Selby and York who have a spare room and who can provide a welcoming and safe place to stay for vulnerable 16-17 year olds.

As a volunteer host, your role will be to work with the young person and SASH to help them settle in York, get into education and learn to live independently. SASH will provide full training, ongoing support and help with expenses.

You do not need any special skills to be a volunteer host. However, you need to be able to empathise with the young person’s situation, be sensitive to their circumstances and experiences and be prepared to work closely with SASH and the Local Authority services to provide the support that they need.
