6% of all rough sleepers last autumn were aged 25 years or younger

The government statistics on rough sleeping were released yesterday.

No rough sleeping is acceptable, but to learn that 6% of all rough sleepers last autumn were aged 25 years or younger was particularly worrying.

Many of the young people we help will have been sofa-surfing before being referred to SASH, which puts them at risk of dropping out of education or employment, or of exploitation by others.

For those needing emergency accommodation through our Nightstop service, the situation is even more concerning: 80% of those responding to our questionnaire say that they would have slept rough, or did not know what they would have done had Nightstop not been available.

For these young people, our Nightstop hosts provide a lifeline. They offer their spare room, a hot meal, a chance to get a shower and someone to talk to. Their involvement means that we can keep a young person safe at a time of crisis, while we work with the local authorities to find them somewhere permanent to live.

The support our hosts give is priceless and we are immensely grateful to the 95 households we currently have hosting for SASH. But we need more to keep up with demand.

Could you help? If you have a spare room and want to help, the chances are you can.

Please call us now on 01904 652043 to find out more, or visit our hosting pages and download an application form.
